A year to forget

The year 2012 will not be looked back on with fond memories for Scotland. Only two wins from eight games, not a single one in competitive action, and yet another major tournament passing us by with noses pressed up against the window. Only if you’re into football betting and laid on the inevitability of Craig Levein’s eventual sacking can you have taken any satisfaction from the year as a Scotland fan.

Scotland v Eastern Europe

It’s 1998, I am 7 years old and Scotland are playing Brazil in the group stages of the FIFA World Cup. Little did I know it would be at least 16 years until our great country would be gracing the stage at a national competition. We still have a mathematical chance of reaching Brazil in two years time, but this would involve a miracle in proportion to me becoming a professional footballer.

As other nations turn their minds to preparations for UEFA Euro 2012, Scotland’s failure once again to qualify means that they are focussing, earlier than hoped on the next campaign. With just two more planned friendlies before the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers begin in September, last night’s game against Slovenia represented one of the final chances for Craig Levein to look at new players.
