A year to forget

The year 2012 will not be looked back on with fond memories for Scotland. Only two wins from eight games, not a single one in competitive action, and yet another major tournament passing us by with noses pressed up against the window. Only if you’re into football betting and laid on the inevitability of Craig Levein’s eventual sacking can you have taken any satisfaction from the year as a Scotland fan.

Levein relieved of Scotland duties

On Monday evening Craig Levein was relieved of his duties as Scotland national team manager. The move has been expected since the defeat to Belgium in October and few would argue that it is the wrong one given Scotland’s start to the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign. Levein, however, will continue to be paid until the end of his contract in 2014, at a reported cost to the SFA of £700,000.

Match preview: Scotland v Macedonia

Just one match into the qualifying campaign for the FIFA World Cup 2014 and Scotland arrive at what is widely considered to be a ‘must-win’ encounter. Such media hyperbole is rarely warranted, but with Scotland having already surrendered two points on Saturday, in a group which is likely to be very tight, they cannot afford to see another chance go begging against a side likely to finish near the bottom.
