It spoke volumes about the Scottish national sides recent plight, that the only crumb of comfort that some fans felt in yesterdays build up was that at one stage the game in Novi Sad looked as if it was going to be called off. Considering the ineptitude of the performance that surrounded last Friday’s 2-1 home defeat to Wales, the thought of watching another Scotland game felt about as appealing as sitting through a Danny Dyer movie marathon, or tuning into a Babestation special starring Jo Brand.

Boyd, Bridcutt and Mackay-Steven included in Scotland squad

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan named the squad this afternoon for his first competitive action since taking the job, and included the uncapped trio of George Boyd, Liam Bridcutt and Gary Mackay-Steven. Scotland face Wales on Friday 22nd March at Hampden before travelling to the Karadorde Stadium in Novi Sad to play Serbia the following Tuesday.

Strachan named new Scotland boss

Gordon Strachan has been named as the new coach of the Scottish national team today on a three and a half year deal. The former Celtic boss replaces Craig Levein, who was sacked in November after a disastrous start to the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign, and will be charged with trying to end Scotland’s long wait for major tournament qualification.

A year to forget

The year 2012 will not be looked back on with fond memories for Scotland. Only two wins from eight games, not a single one in competitive action, and yet another major tournament passing us by with noses pressed up against the window.
