A year to forget

The year 2012 will not be looked back on with fond memories for Scotland. Only two wins from eight games, not a single one in competitive action, and yet another major tournament passing us by with noses pressed up against the window. Only if you’re into football betting and laid on the inevitability of Craig Levein’s eventual sacking can you have taken any satisfaction from the year as a Scotland fan.

Match review: Belgium 2-0 Scotland

It always seems odd that Scotland fans rarely sing the second verse of the Flower of Scotland. Whenever its performed, those singing it always skip from verse 1 to 3. Perhaps it could be put down to people not knowing the words, or the fact the lyrics seem a bit clumsier in that second stanza, it just doesn’t seem quite as inspiring as the verses that surround it.

Fletchers return to Scotland squad

The Scotland squad for the crucial FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers against Wales and Belgium was released today, and amongst the usual names there were two pleasant surprises, Darren and Steven Fletcher. The former has fought back from an illness which many feared might bring a premature end to his career while the latter has been in international exile since withdrawing himself from selection in the wake of the infamous 4-6-0.
