Scotland begin a new era on Wednesday evening at Pittodrie. Occasionally that term is preceded by the word brave, or even expectant, but the hopes of the Tartan Army are now so frugal, they’d probably be happy if Gordon Strachan’s tenure can eventually be described simply as the, we got slightly better era.

Strachan named new Scotland boss

Gordon Strachan has been named as the new coach of the Scottish national team today on a three and a half year deal. The former Celtic boss replaces Craig Levein, who was sacked in November after a disastrous start to the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign, and will be charged with trying to end Scotland’s long wait for major tournament qualification.

A year to forget

The year 2012 will not be looked back on with fond memories for Scotland. Only two wins from eight games, not a single one in competitive action, and yet another major tournament passing us by with noses pressed up against the window. Only if you’re into football betting and laid on the inevitability of Craig Levein’s eventual sacking can you have taken any satisfaction from the year as a Scotland fan.

Match review: Luxembourg 1-2 Scotland

Scotland fans weren’t asking for too much last night, they weren’t expecting a goals avalanche or some tiki-taka themed football. Just a reason or two to look to the future and say “well maybe it’s not that bad”. Perhaps it wasn’t the fixture to look for it, after all most people had derided the fixture in some shape way or form over the last week. It was a waste of time to take on a minnow, what’s the point of picking the old guard, and then conversely when a clutch of those first choices threw a sickie, what’s the point of picking guys like Shinnie, Barr and Kelly?

Match preview: Luxembourg v Scotland

On Wednesday night Scotland travel to Luxembourg to take part in a friendly that, frankly, few of their fans are enticed by. The first game of the post Craig Levein era seems somewhat of a damp squib with Billy Stark in caretaker charge and with little chance of landing the job on a permanent basis.
